Trying Something New

I've been thinking.

Now, honestly, that should be the lowest possible bar for anyone who writes, but I'm looking at it as a milestone. I haven't written anything novel-length in a while. I haven't even managed novella length, to my shame. But I do write short things, and I do enjoy it.

The best thing for me about short fiction is that it makes you terribly conscious of the power of each word. I used to write challenge flash fiction on a fiction archive online. With a thousand words or less, you need to hook a reader into your world, hold their attention, and hopefully surprise them just a little. If the challenge was designed by a particularly evil person, it might be a calendar quarter's worth of words you could conceivably not encounter in a lifetime. Flash fiction, whether you're writing fan fiction or original fiction, is a crucible.

But back to the random firing of synapses in my head. I have been debating putting some of that flash fiction and other short works here on this website. If nothing else, it might be fun to see if I can hook anyone with my little experiments in short fiction. So stay tuned for the first offering!
